WHAT
ARE “NEW BASELINES”
Define: Baseline: is a starting point or condition against which future changes are measured. Ref: www.georgetown.edu
New baselines is the idea that in order to create a new experience in life, a desired experience, we need to create new ideas of what we accept in our lives that support us in creating the desired experience. If we desire happiness, we must first make the decision to be happy. When we make the decision to be happy, our choices will be based on that new baseline of living and being. So choices we made when happiness seemed elusive probably supported the idea “happiness is elusive.” Now we can evaluate our choices and make decisions based on what will bring us greater happiness.
This process is very simple. Even as new choices are presented, we evaluate them on how they will affect our baseline. For instance, we make a choice to be happy no matter what is going on within us or around us. We choose thoughts that support our idea of happiness (this means, we consistently monitor the thoughts we have all of the time), we begin to watch television and movies that support feeling happy, or we listen to music that allows for that happy feeling to flow through us. We also begin to eliminate the things around us that once brought us unhappiness, whether it be relationships, habits, environment, etc. A lot of times, we will not even see how our situation may change to bring about this happiness. It will just flow. As we create new baselines for ourselves, situations and circumstances will change; sometimes slowly and other times rapidly. If the situation is changing rapidly, we just flow with the changes with the knowing and understanding that happiness will present itself and it always does. This is how we develop new baselines.
This quote from Jack Canfield sums up our new baseline. “If it isn’t fun, we don’t do it.”
